AFTERLIGHT: memory as residue

afterlight (noun) - af·ter·light: "the light remaining in the sky after sunset, also known as afterglow, or figuratively as a reflection on past events (retrospect). It describes a lingering illumination, whether it is the twilight glow or a memory."

This debut collection explores the gentle grief that comes with leaving a place run wild with memories, and a departure from childhood. It looks at places we inhabit as characters in our lives. Using shadows and light as a thematic focus, the pieces illustrate the meaning we attach to tangible places and things; textures of the earth, a favorite chair, a corner of a room you can't physically return to.

Marley's works are minimalistic, monochromatic depictions of memories skewed by time, tracing a color palette inspired her own childhood in the woods of Vermont.

The collection asks: "When we leave, do our shadows stay?" What really remains is the residue of our memories.
